Crackhead Logic

Crackhead Logic
Darcy Mohamed

“The rule change, proposed by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), would allow agencies — which have power over more than $1.1 trillion in funds — to terminate grants at any time, for any reason, without an appeal process. This would greatly expand the authority of political appointees to cancel promised funding for projects that do not align with an administration’s policy agenda.”

I began reading this article as a concerned human trafficking survivor. I didn’t even read much of it. This second paragraph stopped me cold. It wasn’t just for the impact on other survivors or the fact that it’s coming from a Republican controlled government. It was so much more.

My mind began branching off into how disastrous this policy would be in a multitude of ways both now and in the future. When I responded to Team Osborn’s reply, I kept it fairly simple. In the background I had numerous more specific ideas about how government can and should do better.

One was on how to stabilize our government through various administrations. It has been a planning nightmare for government agencies and grant recipients to deal with the changing whims, priorities and budgetary notions of differing administrations.

Many programs have had to fold up shop; beg for even more donations to continue; cut services; etc in that split second when they go from being funded to no longer being funded. It creates chaos, especially within the community they serve. It leads to burn out for those trying to help their community thrive. It wastes time and resources that could’ve been better used. It leads to desperate measures needing to be taken to survive the devastating blow.

In Nebraska we have seen such deep cuts to budgets in the Unicameral and DC that have left us Nebraskans and our fellow Americans in dire straits. It has become a popular political tactic to cut taxes and spend money quite vocally for the masses. In reality the biggest cuts and expenditures are for their wealthy donors. They balance the budget using what is known in the ghetto as ‘crackhead’ accounting and logic.

An example of this in the ghetto would be a crackhead wanting a $5 pop from the corner store. They don’t even understand the concept of buying a case of pop and having it last the whole month for just a bit more. They spend the day wandering the city getting money and conducting ‘business.’

They began with $4.50 but their business skills are horrible. They buy items and then sell them for less. They work ten times harder than necessary to get the 50 cents. At the end of the day, they strut around town, proud as a peacock with their pop in hand to prove that their business skills are sound.

This is what politicians have done. They need $5 million to build a monument to their greatness, also known as a pet project. They have $4.5 million. They get to work on their fellow politicians and donors. They expound on the benefits of the monument while ignoring the fact that their constituents are in need of food and shelter. They make deals to where they will support a 100 different pet projects for others costing $50 billion dollars just to get that half a million.

They then strut around their district showing off their great accomplishment like a proud peacock. We, the people clap and smile while wondering how we will survive without food or shelter. At least the crackhead got his pop and won’t be bothering us for the rest of the day while we’re trying to actually accomplish something wise and sustainable. It’s a small blessing to escape their illogical, chaotic world.

If we, the people decide that we are tired of a politician’s games and elect a new representative, they then set to work proving that they are nothing like our old one. They get rid of the despised pet projects and numerous helpful ones to make their efforts appear even greater. They prove how much they saved the taxpayers by confidently giving us a small break and a much larger one for their wealthy donors. Meanwhile, we, the people get a bunch of broken promises and frustration for our tax dollars while working even harder for less and being forced to do more with that less year after year. At least the crackhead got his pop and is strutting around with pride though.

I would much rather stop this shell game that politicians play. Approved programs and government agencies must be protected from these games, not put into further jeopardy. We must safeguard their operations by paying our outstanding bills first and foremost.

This proposed decision from the OMB will only hasten the demise of our great nation at the hands of our elected officials by giving them the ability to play their games without any effort. It gives even greater control to our crackhead who is now strutting around town with two $5 pops. They have one for each hand now, while we starve.

I pray that wiser, cooler heads prevail and stop this madness. We love our crackheads but they must be kept in check because

Every life matters, especially yours.

God bless Nebraska and especially Her people.

I am proud of my unique American identity. I am a proud survivor of human trafficking and a fighter for the abused and vulnerable of all kinds. No human should ever know the horrors of enslavement nor abuse of any kind. We MUST end the cycle of abuse. There is no greater gift we can give humanity.
