The United Nations
Many in America have become disillusioned with not only our own government institutions but the United Nations as well. Some believe that we have done far too much for our international community through our unequal expenditures in aid and military assistance via the UN. They see the endless, misguided wars and peacekeeping missions that have taken far too many of our children as proof that our efforts are in vain.
I don’t hold this same viewpoint but see great room for improvement within the world body we helped create 80 years ago. The international community has been frustrated by being beholden to our whims. Our veto power and purse have been the greatest obstacles to achieving more equity and peace within the body itself and throughout the world.
We have used them as a way of perpetuating our devastating colonial ambitions along with corporate interests. We have aided and abetted war crimes, genocides, famine, trafficking and more in these pursuits that do not benefit our nation nor our world. They are antithetical to our beliefs as Americans and humans. They must change before the world passes us by.
Many people and nations throughout the world would be more than willing to sacrifice and do more to aid the missions of the United Nations if only they saw equity and humanity in them.
Small nations being decimated by environmental issues caused heavily by large corporations are helpless when the toll on humanity is ignored in favor of corporate interests every time.
Nations being forced to accept corporate thuggery in order to survive or are caught in genocides to enrich the corporate war machines have little or no incentive to assist the United Nations.
I believe that if we put ourselves on equal footing with the world within the United Nations as to the weight of our vote while ensuring through Congress that no President nor Congress itself can pull out of international agreements, organizations and commitments including financial ones without a plurality would give the world the confidence needed to invest in the United Nations with the necessary finances, cooperation and security forces to make its missions far more successful and effective.
Because every life matters, especially yours.
God bless Nebraska and especially her people.
