Shalom, Salam, Peace

May Allah protect and rightly guide Dr Adam Hamawy of New Jersey. Amin.

I read an article about Dr Hamawy and how his campaign for US House of Representatives is remarkable. I kept saying aiwa Mashallah or yes, God preserve it. When I got to the end, I had hope for not just America and Palestine but ummah wahid as well, our one community, humanity itself.

“In his victory speech on Tuesday night, Hamawy said his win signalled a new “era” in US politics.

“Let me be absolutely clear with you all and everyone watching today: There was once a time when this may have worked, where racist and anti-Muslim attacks could swing an election,” he said.

“That era of American politics is over.””

As a Muslim American who endured the backlash after 9/11, I remember an era when we couldn’t even talk about Palestine without being labeled an antisemite and anti American. In the Jewish neighborhood where I worked for an amazing Jewish American, we rarely spoke about it because we respected each other too much to let Israel and Palestine divide us in America. There were times where we prayed and gave condolences for the dead on both sides of the border walls. There were times where we agreed that the settlements were wrong. There were even times where we agreed on the apartheid and genocide of the Palestinian people.

It was usually Americans who had no knowledge of the history, religions nor cultures involved who voiced their opinions strongly against the humanity of the Palestinian people, Arabs, Muslims and others. Our communities spent decades informing and teaching these people. We held our heads high as we navigated the treacherous waters of diplomacy with our fellow Americans. I must say that I am proud of all of our fellow Americans.

I have even seen in the reactions of my fellow Nebraskans that we are changing for the better. I have spoken with many about my faith of Islam, Palestine and world affairs. I find more wanting peace and justice throughout the world than not. We are tired of the wasted lives and money simply for greed, power and control that is destructive and pointless.

We want our service members to be proud of their service and sacrifice. We want them to be called into action as a last resort. We want them to come home safe and sound. I grew up like many screaming, “No more Vietnams.”

I am the proud daughter of just one of our brave who received the Purple Heart for their service and sacrifice in Vietnam. He was always proud of me for being “Always Loyal’ to his boys, especially those who never made it home. Semper Fidelis! Oorah!

It’s time for peace. Too many lives we are losing. In the words of the faithful in Israel, Palestine and America, shalom, salam, peace because

Every life matters, especially yours.

God bless the world and especially Her people.

I am proud of my unique American identity. I am a proud survivor of human trafficking and a fighter for the abused and vulnerable of all kinds. No human should ever know the horrors of enslavement nor abuse of any kind. We MUST end the cycle of abuse. There is no greater gift we can give humanity.
